New Dewalt Tool Connect Chip, a Bluetooth Tracker Attachment

$

Dewalt DCE042 Tool Connect Chip

Dewalt has introduced a new Tool Connect CHIP, model DCE042, which will allow compatible tools to be integrated into their wireless app and hardware-based tracking system.

The Chip acts like a Bluetooth beacon that can be used for tool tracking and management.

Dewalt says:

The TOOL CONNECT™ System is designed to seamlessly track, assign and manage jobsite inventory to optimize productivity, saving time and budget.

Tool Connect Site Manager software is available for mobile devices, and there is also a web-based interface.

Dewalt DCE042 Tool Connect Chip Screws

Tool Connect isn’t a new development, but the Chip is. It’s essentially an add-on that can installed to compatible tools.

At this time, Dewalt says that there are plans to introduce more Tool Connect Chip-ready tools, with 15 additional power tool expected to launch within the next year.

Here is a list of current Tool Connect Chip-ready tools:

  • ATOMIC Compact Series™ 20V MAX* Brushless Cordless 1-3/4-In. Bandsaw (DCS377)
  • 20V Max Brushless Hammer Drill with FLEXVOLT ADVANTAGE Technology (DCD999)
  • 20V Max Brushless 4-1/2-In.-5-In. Cordless Grinder with FLEXVOLT ADVANTAGE Technology (DCG416)
  • 20V Max Brushless Reciprocating Saw with FLEXVOLT ADVANTAGE Technology (DCS386)
  • 20V Max Brushless 7-1/4-In. Circular Saw with FLEXVOLT ADVANTAGE Technology (DCS573)
  • Select units within the ToughSystem® 2.0 Storage System

Basically, it works with the 20V Max Atomic series bandsaw, all four 20V Max FlexVolt Advantage tools, and select ToughSystem 2.0 storage products.

15 more tools will be Chip-ready.

Dewalt DCE042 Tool Connect Tag vs Chip Size

The Tool Connect Chip works similarly to the Tool Connect Tag (DCE041), which Dewalt says already works with 31 Tag-ready tools. Several additional Tag-ready tools are also in development.

Whereas the Tag can be installed to anything, regardless of brand, make, or model, and using industrial double-sided tape, glue, screws, or even zip ties, the Chip inserts into a special pocket that’s integrated into compatible tools and secured using two screws.

The Chip has a user-replaceable battery.

Discussion

Tool tracking seems to be increasing in popularity, and it will no doubt increase in popularity.

One limitation with  this type of product is in the scope of the network. Each Tool Connect product has a Bluetooth beacon, and app-equipped smartphone devices will pick it up and transmit its location data. This means that the app is an integral part of the system, not just for its active use but for its passive functionality as well. The more devices the app is installed to, the broader the network.

At $15 MSRP, the Chip seems to be reasonably affordable, and that will help to lower the barrier of entry. Plus it installs neatly within a tool itself. While the Tool Tag is not bulky, there’s no streamlined way to install it to many existing products, only larger larger equipment such as tool boxes, ladders, and larger power tools.

It will be interesting to see what types of products will be Chip-ready, and which won’t be. Dewalt’s FlexVolt Advantage tools, for instance, are Chip-ready. Their new 360°x3 green laser level is not, but it is Tool Connect Tag-ready.

Dewalt isn’t the only cordless power tool brand with a tool tracking and inventory management system.

Milwaukee One-Key Tool Family as of June 2017

According to Milwaukee, their One-Key system is the tool industry’s largest tracking network.

There’s also of course Apple’s new AirTag, but so far it looks to be a consumer product with unexplored tool industry potential.

22 New Amazon Tool Deals for Father’s Day 2021

$

Earlier this week, I republished my post on Gearwrench’s Double-X pliers. Those pliers are must-have tools, in my opinion, and they’re currently on sale.

Amazon has them labeled as a deal, but I could not find the source page. Usually with deals like that, there’s a category page (a node in Amazon parlance), but no matter how hard I looked, I couldn’t find it!

When you look at Amazon’s tool department deals page, there’s a whole lot of useless nothing, at least from my opinion. Where are the brand-name tool deals they used to have? The deals that I would take advantage of as a customer and the ones worth sharing on ToolGuyd?

I started searching for more details on what Amazon Prime Day 2021 could hold, and then I hit the mother lode!! Here are some tool deals I’d actually buy!!

There are 22 deals here in total, and I’ll be checking back to see if there are any more.

GEARWRENCH 8″ Pitbull Dual Material Universal Cutting Pliers

Gearwrench Universal Pliers

This Gearwrench Pitbull 2-in-1 “universal” pliers would have replaced the two tools I used for cutting, twisting, and bending stainless steel wire the other day, and the price seems right.

I couldn’t fight the urge and bought one on the spot. I’d buy more, but they’re running low and I want to save some for you guys.

Deal Price: $16.42

GEARWRENCH 4pc Pitbull Dual Material Mixed Plier Set

Gearwrench Comfort Grip Pitbull Pliers Set

If you want a set of general purpose pliers, this Gearwrench set seems to be a good buy for what you get. I’ve been working with the Gearwrench Pitbull pliers lineup and have been pleased with what I’m seeing.

Personally, I like to buy pliers individually, but sometimes a set can be very cost-effective.

Vessel Megadora 6pc Screwdriver Set

Vessel JawsFit Screwdriver Set

Vessel makes good products, and their Megadora screwdriver line seems to be well-regarded. I’ve used and like some of their other tools.

These have a “JawsFit” engagement that they say bites into screw heads. It looks to have serrations, not unlike other brands’ anti-camout grooves.

This seems like an interesting set, and could be worth it if you’re looking for something a bit more premium and different to try out.

Deal Price: 56.57

If you want to spend a little more, check out the 8pc set for $66.24. It looks to come with the same 6 screwdrivers and adds in 2 stubbies and an EVA foam tray.

Halder 20oz Dead Blow Hammer

Halder Dead Blow Hammer

I like this style of dead blow. This one has a 20 oz head and with replaceable nylon faces 1.18″ in diameter.

I’d buy this in a heartbeat if I didn’t already have a similar hammer or two.

Note: The product image might be a “product family” image, rather than of the exact model you get with this deal. Pay closer attention to the specs.

SATA, an Apex Tool Group brand has quite a few deals as well, with discounts of “up to 25% off.”

Some of the deals caught my attention, such as a set of SAE and metric wrench racks for less than $11. That seems to be a good buy.

Other deals caught my attention because they look to be SATA-branded versions of highly recommended Gearwrench tools, such as this ratcheting tap and die handle set. I’ve owned this set (under GW branding) for quite a while now, and while I don’t use it with every thread-cutting application, it’s an appreciated part of my kit.

There are also many value-priced tools on sale, such as an 18 oz dead blow hammer on sale for $14.22.

Phillips sizes range from PH #0 thru PH #2, and slotted sizes range from 2 to 10mm.

This set is a little more than I need, but I love this handle shape and size. I’ve owned Wiha soft finish-handled screwdrivers like this for nearly 13 years now, and I’ve bought more along the way.

What’s interesting is that this 13pc insulated screwdriver set is only a few dollars more than their 12pc standard screwdriver set.

I couldn’t pass up some of these deals, and purchased the Gearwrench Pitbull pliers,Vessel Megadora screwdriver set (8pc with foam tray, not the actual deal set), and I’m leaning towards buying one or both of the small-sized Halder hammers. (I bought some of their tools a few months ago and so far have been pleased with the brand.)

I might buy some of the SATA tools as well. I’ve been using a new Husky dead blow on some rough materials and it’s showing signs of abuse despite only being a few weeks old. I’m thinking maybe the 37oz dead blow for $20.03.

New Harbor Freight Hercules Brushless Circular Saw

Harbor Freight Hercules Brushless Circular Saw

Harbor Freight has promised that more Hercules brushless power tools would be launching in 2021, and they’re making good on it. They’ve just introduced a new Hercules 20V  brushless 7-1/4″ circular saw, model 57612.

Harbor Freight’s Hercules 20V lineup now includes 4 brushless power tools:

The new circular saw’s specs seem on-par with other popular options on the market today.

Key Features & Specs

  • 5000 RPM
  • 0-50° bevel range
  • 2-1/2″ max depth of cut

Harbor Freight Hercules 20V Cordless Power Tool Bundle Deal

Harbor Freight has an in-store bundle deal promo, where you save $25 when you buy any Hercules cordless power tool, battery, and charger. I don’t know why they can’t also offer this online.

Discussion

I find it interesting to think that, at least spec-wise, this tool would have bested all other 18V and 20V Max-class circular saws on the market just a few years ago.

Brushless tech has gotten far less expensive, with some brands launching entry-level-performing tools with brushless motors, although it doesn’t look like Harbor Freight is doing that here.

It’s good to see Harbor Freight pushing forward with a steady pace of new Hercules cordless power tool launches.

Still, it remains to be seen how well these tools fare against price-competitive brands.

Dewalt Xtreme Subcompact 12V Impact Wrenches – Now Available

Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max Brushless Impact Wrench

Dewalt has come out with 2 new Xtreme Subcompact 12V Max cordless impact wrenches that are aimed at automotive maintenance and repair applications. The new Dewalt Xtreme impact wrenches will be available in 3/8″ (DCF903) and 1/2″ (DCF901) sizes.

Update 6/8/21: The 3/8″ bare tool impact and 1/2″ bare tool impact are available at Lowe’s with free shipping. The kits are not yet available.

Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max Brushless Impact Wrench Bare Tool

There are two big takeaways about these new tools. First, they are compact and light. A side profile of the new Dewalt Xtreme impact wrenches shows that they were going for a stubby-like geometry to enable the wrenches to fit into tighter spaces.

Second, these wrenches are not light in power. Dewalt says that they can deliver up to 250 ft-lbs of max tightening torque, and up to 400 ft-lbs of max breakaway torque. That’s 3,000 and 4,800 in-lbs, respectively.

This bests the 250 ft-lbs of breakaway torque for Milwaukee’s M12 Fuel stubby impact wrenches, as well as the recent Ridgid 18V Subcompact impact wrench which delivers 200 ft-lbs of max fastening torque and 225 ft-lbs of max breakaway torque.

Makita’s 18V Subcompact cordless 1/2″ impact wrench delivers 155 ft-lbs max fastening torque and 245 ft-lbs of max nut-busting torque.

So, on paper, Dewalt’s Xtreme 12V Max brushless impact wrenches match up to a popular Milwaukee M12 model and best Ridgid and Makita 18V models – and not by small margins.

Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max Brushless Impact Wrench Used in Engine Bay

Dewalt says that their new cordless impact wrenches were designed to tackle a variety of automotive maintenance applications, such as brake repair, engine bay work, suspension work, and other such tasks.

The tools have the power to loosen stubborn fasteners, but the smaller size and lighter weight to make them easy to maneuver and comfortable to use.

Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max Brushless Impact Wrench Used on Wheel Lug Nuts

Both new impact wrenches feature a hog rung anvil for easy socket changes, and a glass-filled nylon housing that resists the effects of common automotive chemicals and solvents.

Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max Brushless Impact Wrench Kit

The new Dewalt Xtreme impact wrenches will be available in kit format, bundled with one 3.0Ah battery and one 5.0Ah battery, with both featuring oil-resistant housings.

Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max Brushless Impact Wrench Oil-Resistant Battery

These oil-resistant 12V Max batteries, similar to the FlexVolt batteries that ship with Dewalt’s cordless pipe threader, are designed for use in an automotive shop and similar environments.

Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max Brushless Impact Wrench with Protective Boot

An optional protective boot accessory is available separately .

Features & Specifications

  • 3/8″ (DCF903) or 1/2″ (DCF901) anvil
  • Hog ring socket retention
  • Brushless motor
  • 250 ft-lbs max fastening torque
  • 400 ft-lbs max reverse torque
  • 0-2850 RPM
  • 0-3250 IPM
  • 5.2″ length
  • Weighs 2 lbs (tool only)
  • LED worklights
  • Oil and solvent-resistant construction
  • Kitted with oil-resistant batteries
  • Belt hook is included
  • Optional protective boot (available separately)

The kits come with (1) oil-resistant 3.0Ah battery (DCB124G), (1) oil-resistant 5.0Ah battery (DCB126G), a charger (DCB112), and a kit bag.

Discussion

I said that the new Dewalt 12V Max 5.0Ah battery size suggested that more Xtreme Subcompact tools were on the way, and it looks like I was right!

On paper, the new Xtreme impact wrenches have impressive specs, especially for their compact size and weight.

Overall, this looks to be a very strong and compelling expansion of the Dewalt Xtreme cordless power tool lineup. It’s interesting that this kit was specifically designed and kitted for automotive maintenance work and related tasks, and I wonder – are more on the way?

Dewalt is proving they are committed to expanding their line of Xtreme Subcompact 12V Max cordless power tools, something that should please long-time users and fans.

Metabo HPT MultiVolt Cordless Power Tool System 2021 Branding

Metabo HPT is refreshing the branding and messaging behind their MultiVolt cordless power tool system, focusing on the flexibility their tech provides.

The MultiVolt battery can power any of Metabo HPT’s 18V tools, as well as any of their 36V tools.

If you want go lighter, such as with the more compact 18V tools, you can pair such tools with compact 18V battery options.

If you need to go longer, there are higher capacity MultiVolt batteries to choose from.

And if you want to go all day, Metabo HPT is the only brand to offer an AC adapter that works with ALL of their 36V cordless power tools.

Note: I’ll be putting a lot of time in with a couple of Metabo HPT 18V and MultiVolt tools as part of a sponsorship with the brand. If you have any questions or requests, please let me know!

MultiVolt Family from Metabo HPT 2021

The MultiVolt cordless power tool system has grown quite a bit, and is still growing. If you recall, the brand recently launched a new cordless full-size brushless router.

MultiVolt Advantage from Metabo HPT

The “MultiVolt Advantage” is easy to navigate.

Battery Options for 18V Tools

  • 1.5Ah
  • 3.0Ah – I really like this size battery for compact drills and impact drivers!

Battery Options for 18V or 36V Tools

  • 2.5Ah/5.0Ah MultiVolt
  • 4.0Ah/8.0Ah MultiVolt

Capacity is in 36V/18V format. For instance, first battery delivers 5.0Ah charge capacity when paired with an 18V cordless power tool, or 2.5Ah when paired with a 36V tool. The energy capacity, or 90 watt-hours is the same in any configuration.

AC Power Option for 36V Tools

  • MultiVolt 36V AC adapter

My Take on it

I think that the 5.0Ah battery is the “sweet spot.” It works with all of the MultiVolt 18V and 36V tools and is a great place to start. If you need a lighter solution, go with an 18V tool and compact battery. If you need longer runtime, go with the higher capacity MultiVolt battery. And then you have the AC adapter if you need or want it for 36V tools.

For some tools, you can go 18V or 36V, such as with similar impact drivers in both systems. Do you think you’ll want to use it with a compact battery? Go with the 18V option. Do you think you might want to use the AC adapter? Go with the 36V version.

Retail Availability

The MultiVolt system is available at Lowe’s stores nationwide, as well as Menard’s, Amazon, and select independent dealers.

More specialty tools are also available online, such as:

  • Rebar cutter/bender
  • Cordless plunge router
  • Metal connector nailer
  • Duplex nailer
  • 10″ cordless table saw

Many of these tools are not available from any other brand, such as the full 10″ sized table saw.

Quite a few of you have been asking for a cordless metal connector nailer. Well, here you go!

I love using that tool more than any other brands’ impact, so much so that I bought and gave away a kit so that I could keep my review sample as a personal tool. I know there are plenty who might disagree with me, but I always like giving flashlights as gifts. Too many people have come to rely on their $1000+ smartphones as flashlights in situations where a standalone flashlight would work a lot better.

Even if you’re set with gift shopping, maybe you need an upgrade?

Milwaukee Rover Magnetic Floodlight

Milwaukee 2108 LED Flood Light Flashlight

The Milwaukee Rover magnetic flood light delivers 300 lumens of uniform illumination. It has a pocketable size, strong magnets, and is one of the toughest compact lights I have ever used.

At $20, this is a solid deal that I heartily recommend.

Price: $20

Tip: I’ve grown fed up with alkaline batteries leaking in everything. This light is designed around 1.5V cells and you lose a brightness level if you use 1.2V rechargeables. The Rover comes with 2xAA batteries, and once you wear those down, consider replacing them with Energizer AA lithium cells.

Husky LED Headlamp

Husky LED Headlamp HH350

I passed along a Husky LED headlamp to my wife’s uncle, and he uses it all the time and still thanks me for. This is a new model, and if it’s anything like its predecessor, it’ll be sure to please.

This headlamp was designed to be the best in class, with performance designed to exceed other major selling headlamps.

It features an IPX8 waterproof rating, bright spot emitter, diffuse side emitters, and what look to be medium-distance secondary emitters next to the center spotlight.

Husky says that the Broad Range Headlamp will not disappoint, and I’m inclined to believe it.

Tip: 3xAAA batteries are included, and once they’re depleted, consider Energizer AAA lithium cells.

Milwaukee LED Flashlight (3xAAA)

Milwaukee 3xAAA Aluminum LED Flashlight

If you want a more traditionally-styled flashlight, this Milwaukee 3xAAA light has an aluminum body, 325 lumen max brightness, high and low modes, IP67 dust and waterproof construction 4 meters (~12 feet) of impact resistance, and tailcap switch with on/off and momentary activation modes.

You can also slide the head for beam adjustment, focusing the light for a spotlight beam shape or spreading it for a floodlight.

HOT Deals: Dewalt Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit for $99!!

$

Dewalt’s 20V Max brushless oscillating multi-tool kit promos are ALWAYS a good buy.

There are two separate Dewalt oscillating multi-tool deals to choose from, depending on your preference, and we’ll talk about both.

(Milwaukee Tool fans – there’s an ongoing M18 deal as well, but I’d be happier if it were $20 less.)

This post was updated on 6/9/2021.

Dewalt Atomic Brushless Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit DCS354D1

Dewalt DCS354D1 Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit

First up, this promo kit features Dewalt’s Atomic 20V Max brushless oscillating multi-tool, model DCS354.

This is an update to the very well-regarded DCS355, which was a main-line tool and also featured in single battery kits for a couple of years.

  • Brushless motor
  • Tool-free blade change system
  • 0 to 18,000 OPM
  • Dual-Grip variable speed trigger
  • LED worklight

This promo kit, DCS354D1, comes with the tool, charger, sample blades, and a single 2.0Ah battery.

I don’t see mention of a tool bag – shown above is everything you can expect to get.

Dewalt Brushless 3-Speed Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit DCS356C1

Dewalt DCS356D1 Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit

Next, we have the Dewalt DCS356C1, a 3-speed brushless oscillating multi-tool kit.

You get the oscillating multi-tool, a 1.5Ah battery, charger, starter blades, universal accessory adapter, and a tool bag.

Features and Specs:

  • Brushless motor
  • Tool-free blade change system
  • 3-speed selector
    • Low: 0 to 13,000 OPM
    • Medium: 0 to 17,000 OPM
    • High: 0 to 20,000 OPM
  • 1.6° oscillation angle
  • Dual-Grip variable speed trigger
  • LED worklight

What’s the Difference, and Which Should You Buy?

The DCS354 has a single speed range, the DCS356 has a 3-speed selector. Both have a variable speed trigger switch.

This is what Dewalt said about the DCS356 when we asked about the differences:

The main differences between the ATOMIC and the 356 are the 3-speeds, the lower oscillations (clipped through the module), and the black lever for the blade change.

For the DCS356, we changed the software and added 3 speeds, but it will still have variable speed in the trigger. The 3-speed selector on the foot offers better control, in allowing users to set the max high speed with the selector instead of trying to hold the trigger switch partially in.

Basically, the DCS354 is the single-speed range version, the DCS356 is the 3-speed range version with XR branding that usually denotes a more premium Dewalt cordless power tool product.

The DCS356C1 kit comes with a 1.5Ah battery, and the DCS354D1 kit comes with a higher capacity 2.0Ah battery.

If you want the higher capacity battery and can do without the 3-speed selector, go with the DCS354 Atomic kit. If you want the 3-speed selector and tool bag, go with the DCS356 kit.

Personally, I’d go for the better tool, the DCS356. If you buy into the Dewalt 20V Max cordless power tool system, you’ll have more batteries and probably higher capacity batteries, either already or down the road.

If you change your mind down the road, you can always get more batteries to complement the one you get with this kit. You could also upgrade to the 3-speed tool if you instead choose the single speed model, but the bare tool by itself is $99 via Amazon and $139 at other retailers.

Yep – the bare tool featured in this $99 promo kit costs $99 by itself… and that’s why this is always a hugely popular deal.

For the same $99 price, I’d buy the 3-speed model:

Do you agree? Or would you go with the single-speed kit that’s bundled with the higher capacity Li-ion battery?

Hot or Not? Makita 8pc Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit Deal

Makita 18V 8pc Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit XT801X1

Over at pretty much every Makita retailer right now, they look to have a Father’s Day 2021 deal combo – this 18V 8-tool cordless power tool combo kit for $399, model XT801X1.

We’ve seen this particular combo kit “special buy” before – it appeared for the 2019 winter holiday shopping season and again around Black Friday 2020.

Here’s what this Makita “special buy” combo comes with:

  • Drill/driver (XFD10Z)
  • Impact driver (XDT11Z)
  • Circular saw (6-1/2″, XSS02Z)
  • Compact reciprocating saw (XRJ01Z)
  • 5″ random orbit sander (XOB01Z)
  • 3/8″ sub-compact impact wrench (XWT12ZB)
  • Blower (DUB182Z)
  • LED flashlight (DML815)
  • Rapid charger
  • 2x 3.0Ah batteries
  • Tool bag

While not any of their “latest and greatest” tools, and the batteries are Makita’s lowest capacity 10-cell battery packs, I’d say this is a very good value.

The brushless subcompact impact wrench is a nice addition, and the cordless sander and blower also look to be worthwhile additions.

If you consider that $299 is the typical price point for 4- or 5-tool cordless power tool combo kits, at least promo-priced configurations, you get quite a bit here for just $100 more.

I think that this is going to be one of the better value DIYer starter tool kits, apprentice starter kits, or value-minded Pro combo kits of the Father’s Day 2021 deals season.

It’s similar to the 8pc combo, but with a cordless vac instead of a blower, and without the sander or impact wrench, and you also get a slower charger. But, you save $100 if you don’t need the extras of the 8-tool combo kit. There might be other subtle differences, but I think these are it.

New Makita 18V SubCompact Drill and Impact Driver Kit, but is it an Upgrade?

$
0
0

Makita CX203SYB Sub-Compact Cordless Drill and Impact Driver Combo Kit

Makita has come out with new 18V SubCompact brushless drill and impact driver combo kit, model CX203SYB.

At first glance it looks like it could be an upgrade compared to their existing kit, but there are a couple of things to look out for.

Most notably, compared to their regular combo kit, Makita has downgraded the batteries, from 2.0Ah to 1.5Ah, and they also downgraded the charger from their regular fast charger to their “standard” charger that typically only appears in value-oriented and promo combo kits.

Spec-wise, there don’t seem to be any noticeable changes between these new models and their predecessors, as their on-paper specs are largely the same.

Makita 18V 1-5Ah Battery Pack

Makita lists the 1.5Ah battery as discontinued on their website, and as far as I am aware, it lacks the built-in battery fuel gauge of the compact 2.0Ah battery and modern higher capacity batteries.

Makita’s typical $99 seasonal-promo cordless drill and impact driver combo kits still aren’t discounted for Father’s Day (they’ve been holding at $119 while Dewalt and Milwaukee kits are already on sale), and so maybe this combo kit and separate drill and impact driver kits will be Makita’s new promo kits?

Makita SubCompact Comparisons

Makita 18V SubCompact Cordless Drill Comparison XFD11ZB vs XFD15ZB
Left: XFD11ZB (older model); Right: XFD15ZB (new model)

Compared to the older/previous subcompact drill (XFD11ZB), the new model (XFD15ZB) is a little heavier (2.9 lbs vs. 2.8 lbs), but the two tools have the same speed range and max torque rating.

The two tools are hard to tell apart, and there don’t look to be any significant differences, good or bad.

Makita 18V SubCompact Brushless Impact Driver Comparison XDT15ZB vs XDT18ZB

Compared to the older/previous subcompact impact driver (XDT15ZB), the new model (XDT18ZB) has the same max torque, the same weight, and slightly improved speeds.

Similar to the drill, if you don’t look closely enough, you’d think these were the same tool.

Makita has also launched a new SubCompact drill kit, XFD15SY1B.

This kit comes bundled with (1) 1.5Ah battery and a “standard” charger.

One think I never liked about Makita’s 18V SubCompact cordless drill was its cramped torque clutch dial, which I found to be clunky to adjust. It doesn’t look like this has been improved in the new model. If this is your primary drill, I’m sure you’ll get used to the mechanics and quickly adapt your muscle-memory.

Discussion

Why Makita is bundling these Subcompact brushless tool kits with 1.5Ah capacity batteries? Makita USA lists these batteries as discontinued, and I don’t believe they were ever upgraded with built-in battery fuel gauges. You can’t see the back of the batteries in any of the product images, and so I assume there’s no fuel gauge or they’d show it.

Personally, I find this very disappointing, and not just because of the capacity downgrade and likely absence of a state of charge indicator. Makita seems to have avoided playing marketing games with the battery selection in their promo-priced cordless kits, and so 1.5Ah batteries in premium brushless tool kits seems very uncharacteristic for the brand.

I suppose with lower capacity batteries, users won’t notice or mind as much that the charger isn’t Makita’s typical 18V rapid charger. But the charger selection, like the 1.5Ah batteries, is usually a cost-cutting measure, and one I wouldn’t have expected here.

From what I can tell, the new Subcompact tools aren’t much different from their preceding models, except for the impact which has slightly improved speed specs.

Will these new models replace existing SKUs, or be sold alongside them?

With few apparent differences, why buy these new models over their predecessors?

Should You Buy This Deal?

Metabo HPT is a current ToolGuyd sponsor, and so I’ll try to strip things down as objectively as possible.

The Good

You should buy either of these kits if you want a compact cordless drill or impact driver with competitive specs, small size, and comfortable ergonomics.

The power and performance for their size are respectable if not impressive.

These kits offer a LOT for $79.

The Catch

There’s no fuel gauge on the batteries or on the tool. No belt clip.

The LED worklight is a bit basic.

Perspective

Some might miss the fuel gauge, but you also get two batteries and a hard shell carrying case rather than a soft tool bag. It’s a tradeoff.

Even at the regular $129 pricing of last holiday season’s $99 pricing, you can’t have everything. It seems to me that HPT went big on performance and small on size, and they made hard choices in other areas. Personally, I’m happy with their choice – I’d rather have a tool case than a belt clip, and I’d rather save some money than pay for both.

At the $79 price point, I can forgive these HPT tools for not coming with a fuel gauge or belt clips.

Don’t Buy These Kits if…

The impact has a single range, and so you might want something else (I’d absolutely recommend HPT’s Triple Hammer impact!!) if you want added speed and torque selection features. But, you’re not getting multiple speeds in an 18V tool for anywhere close to this price.

There’s not much to detract from the cordless drill, but I’ll update this section if I can think of anything.

Competitive Analysis

The HPT offerings BEATS the newest Makita subcompact drill and impact driver on specs. The HPT drill can deliver a considerably higher max torque and matches Makita’s top speed (1700 RPM). The HPT impact driver matches the max torque of the Makita (1240 in-lbs) but beats it on speed (3200 vs. 3000 RPM). The new Makita kits each come with (1) 1.5Ah battery, both of these HPT kits come with (2) batteries. They’re also HALF the price.

Dewalt 12V Xtreme Cordless Drill and Recipricating Saw and Backpack Kit Bundle

Over at Lowe’s, they a fantastic Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max cordless power tool combo kit has returned for the Father’s Day 2021 deals season.

Quite a few readers emailed or messaged me about this bundle last winter when it appeared around Black Friday, but by the time I took a look it was too late. So, I’ve been watching and waiting for it to appear for Father’s Day, and it has!

This Dewalt Xtreme combo kit, DCKSS200F2, comes with their compact brushless drill, compact brushless reciprocating saw, and a backpack tool case.

The kit is bundled with a charger and 2x 2.0Ah Li-ion batteries.

Other Dewalt tool dealers have this same combo priced at $239.

I love this drill, and the kit is usually a great deal when it goes on sale for $149 for the holidays. With this kit, you basically get the drill kit, plus the compact reciprocating saw bare tool for just $50 more, and there’s a backpack on top of all that. Just the drill and recip saw for $149 would be a great deal, but the tool backpack seems to be a nice addition.

Dewalt 20V Max Cordless Sander Kit

Over at Acme Tools, they have a fantastic deal on this Dewalt 20V Max brushless sander kit, model DCW210D1.

This Dewalt cordless sander kit, which retails for $199 at other sellers, is just $99 at Acme Tools. The kit comes with the 5″ random orbital sander, a charger, carrying bag, and 2.0Ah Li-ion battery.

This sander is priced at $99 by itself as a bare tool, and so $99 for the kit seems like a great deal!

I started searching for this kit after seeing a display at the local big box store, but they only have this kit at the $199 price. I found another online dealer that has this sander at a promo price, but they have it at $110.

The included 2.0Ah battery delivers a fair amount of runtime and also keeps the weight down. For longer sanding sessions you might want a higher capacity battery or even switch to an AC tool, but for a 2.0Ah battery is a good pairing for a cordless and brushless sander.

Key Features & Specs

Dewalt Cordless Sander DCW210 Hands-on Review

A big box retailer had a “buy a 2Ah starter kit get a free Dewalt finish sander” promo. (I didn’t post about that deal because it was in-store and very short-lived.) It was almost as tempting as this ROS sander deal, and I was thinking of buying it for a family member that’s been getting deeper into woodworking. I balked, after realizing that the recipient would benefit more from a cordless random orbit sander than a 1/4 sheet sander. This deal, however, seems perfect.

(Right after I hit the “publish” button, I’m ordering this sander on the spot, and probably a couple of other things from Acme. It’s too good of a deal to hesitate on.)

Update: I ordered the sander kit by itself and paid the $6.49 shipping. As this isn’t for me, that’s a lot less than I’d be able to ship it for. $105.49 is a fantastic deal for this kit!!

Over at Amazon, via CPO Tools as the seller, they have the Dewalt 20V Max DCD777C2 brushless cordless drill kit for $92.99, plus if you “clip the coupon” you save an extra 15% at checkout.

So, this Dewalt kit comes out to be $79.04 at checkout, plus tax.

I have NEVER seen any Dewalt 20V Max cordless drill kit priced this low, let alone a brushless model.

You should be aware that this is their value-priced special buy drill, but it also has excellent ratings. At the time of this posting, there are more than 4,200 user reviews and ratings, with 87% 5-star and 9% 4-star ratings.

The kit comes with the drill/driver, charger, kit bag, and 2x compact batteries (1.5Ah or 1.3Ah).

This is normally a $99 special buy and seasonal promo, and with this current bonus promo, it’s $79.04 at checkout.

Yes, there are more powerful and better featured cordless drill kits out there, but for the money? I’ve purchased this kit before to give as a gift, and would do it again, it’s a good tool at a great value.

Dewalt Cordless 1/4 Sheet Finish Sander KIT for $99!

Dewalt DCW200BWDCB203C Cordless Sander Promo Kit

Over at Home Depot, they have a fantastic deal on this Dewalt cordless 1/4 sheet finish sander kit bundle. I first spotted this in stores, and thanks to Big Richard, we have the elusive link to a similar online deal.

Here’s the promo – buy the Dewalt 20V Max 2Ah battery and charger starter kit, get the cordless finish sander for free.

Basically, you’re getting a 1-battery cordless sander kit for $99.

This is a fantastic deal, especially since other sellers only have the sander on sale for $99 by itself as a bare tool.

The first time I saw this deal in-store, I balked on it. The second time, it was sold out. The third time, I had made up my mind to get it, but didn’t want to carry it around the store. However, I came across an impulse-buy and didn’t remember about the sander until I was already driving to my next destination.

As mentioned in another recent deal post about a similarly priced Dewalt cordless random orbit sander kit deal, I was planning to get the finish sander deal for a younger family member that’s getting deeper into woodworking and furniture refinishing.

I convinced myself a random orbit sander would be better to start out with, but… I went ahead and ordered this kit as well.

There are benefits to having a cordless random orbit sander and a 1/4 sheet finish sander. As with corded sanders, there’s a little bit overlap where either tool can be used, but plenty of times when you might want one style over the other.

I also told myself that this might be a good 3rd party review opportunity.

And, sending them both kits means they’ll have two batteries in case they need longer runtime. Sure, a 5Ah battery might have done the trick too, but the sanders are both a little lighter with a compact battery than a larger and heavier higher capacity battery.

Here’s my point – this is a fantastic deal. If you’re looking for a good cordless sander, this is a great option at an unbeatable value.

Price: $99

With these deals, I find myself asking if I need a new cordless sander. I still prefer corded since I work with dust collection (indoors or close to a door) 95% of the time. These deals are making a very compelling case. While I’m not ready to cut the cord, I might be ready for personal-use cordless sanders (as opposed to test samples).

There’s a good chance these deals will hurt my wallet further. They’re essentially selling a kit for the price of a bare tool.

Part of my motivation behind these deal posts is in knowing that some of you can and probably will take advantage of a deal. This helps to relieve the “this is such a good deal, I can’t pass it up!” mindset. Maybe passing along a good deal triggers a similar feel-good mechanism as when we score a good deal for ourselves? Sorry, I digress.

As I’ve been moving to more outdoors projects, a good cordless sander would be an asset. And, with these being first-ever promos (to my knowledge), there’s no history to be able to better predict if or when similar deals might return in the future.

I’m in the position where I have cordless sanders at my disposal – test samples and the such – but none are *mine.* I’ll give this some thought and let you know what happens.

But I can say that if I didn’t have cordless sanders already at my disposal, there would be zero hesitation, I’d have already ordered both kits for my own use.

If you have to choose…

Part of the reason I would buy both tools is because a lot of work can really benefit from having both at one’s disposal. I ordered both for my family member because I know the projects they’re getting into can benefit from it, and I also know that other family members in the region will have access the tools, and that they’ll be sure to see use.

I keep calling this a finish sander because most 1/4 sheet sanders are less aggressive with respect to material removal. Another benefit is the rectangular shape that can fit into corners with ease, something you can’t really do with a round pad.

If you can’t decide, I think that Acme Tools’ deal on the Dewalt random orbit sander is the better first purchase, and this 1/4 sheet sander a great complement to follow up with. I don’t think I’ve seen deals like this before – the last Dewalt 20V Max random orbit sander deal was a $174 special buy that also included a jig saw. If you don’t know which you want or need, buy one of each.

Note: Since with this deal you’re technically buying a bundle where you get a bare tool, battery, and charger, you’ll need to source your own tool bag or box to keep the sander in. It’s not a big deal, but it seemed worth mentioning.

Metabo HPT 18V Triple Hammer Impact Driver and Hammer Drill Kit

There’s a new Metabo HPT 18V cordless combo kit deal that’s definitely worth your attention! This combo kit features a brushless hammer drill, their awesome Triple Hammer impact driver, a charger, 2x compact 3.0Ah batteries, and a carrying case for $199.

This is a great deal, considering that the Triple Hammer and 3Ah battery kit (WH18DBDL2) sells for $389.

Buy the Combo Kit Promo via Acme Tools

Metabo HPT’s 18V brushless Triple Hammer is my favorite impact driver. It’s compact, comfortable, powerful, and smooth. There are quite a few different cordless impact drivers that I can heartily recommend, but this one’s my favorite.

When a good promo came around a few years ago, I bought the Triple Hammer with a starter kit and gave it away so that I could consider my original review sample as my own tool. I’ve used it for ToolGuyd and personal projects since then. It’s a little beat up now, but still works as perfectly as it did on Day 1.

Metabo HPT is currently a ToolGuyd sponsor, and because of that I am holding back some of the enthusiasm I have for this tool and promo. If not out of concern that my enthusiasm might be misunderstood, I would use words such as awesome, amazing, and perfect quite a few times, perhaps even in all-caps and bold.

I can’t tell if this kit is a new regular line SKU or a special buy, but it’s a great deal no matter the context. The combo kit features their Triple Hammer impact driver and HPT’s also-excellent compact hammer drill. It’s bundled with 2x 3.0Ah batteries – the kind I use and love with my impact – a charger, and a carrying case.

Over at Acme Tools, they have it priced at $199, which is – sorry, I feel the need to express myself naturally here – PHENOMENAL.

I realize that my sentiments for the Triple Hammer impact are dominating the discussion, but HPT’s compact brushless hammer drill is a great tool as well.

If you want to hear about more budget-friendly HPT 18V brushless drill and impact driver kit options, check out their $79 deals. (As an aside, I’ll be buying that drill/driver kit – at the least – for a relative this week, which should give you an idea of how I feel about those tools.)

Key Features & Specs

    • Normal mode
    • Power mode
    • Self-drilling screw mode
  • 2,900 RPM
  • 4,000 BPM
  • LED worklight

I’m not quite sure how to put it, but in my opinion this is the best compact brushless drill and impact driver combo kit for under $200 right now.

The hammer drill is good, but the Triple Hammer is the defining factor here, which makes this combo kit compelling rather than just competitive.

The Triple Hammer is so good that testing some other models for review purposes can be almost unpleasant. It’s not just the great performance of the tool, but that it delivers such a positive user experience.

I’m a little too close to this tool. If you want another take on it, check out Benjamen’s review on the Triple Hammer.

A few years ago, the 18V Triple Hammer kit was priced at $360+. Here, you get the same excellent tool, the same compact 3Ah batteries, and also a brushless hammer drill, for nearly half the price.

Checking around, the HPT Triple Hammer impact driver kit is STILL priced at a premium – $389 via retailers. With this combo kit, you get the Triple Hammer for substantially less money, plus a compact brushless hammer drill/driver as well.

Fantastic deal.

When it comes to compact cordless drills, I can switch between different brands’ highly recommended models and not really care. But when it comes to impact drivers, unless I have to put in the time with a particular tool, the Triple Hammer is the one I reach for and will always keep at the ready.

Switching to a lesser impact driver can throw me off.

I have always recommended the Triple Hammer, and its only negative (in my opinion and experience) has been its premium pricing. It’s a great tool, but $400 is a lot for any impact driver.

At $200 for the combo kit, I’m wondering why I haven’t gotten one for myself yet. The one and only time I have ever seen a Triple Hammer promo was 2-1/2 years ago – that’s when I bought the tool and a starter set to “pay off” my review sample, and I can’t recall seeing any deals since then.

“But I Only Want the Triple Hammer Impact Driver”

Metabo HPT 18V Triple Hammer Impact Driver Kit

Metabo HPT also has an incredibly good deal on their Triple Hammer impact driver kit, model WH18DBDL2CM.

This is the same 18V Triple Hammer impact driver, but you get 2x 1.5Ah batteries instead of the 3.Ah batteries.

I was going to mention this deal alongside the combo kit deal in a single post, after seeing Lowe’s $249 price. But with Acme Tools’ $199 combo price, I think that deal is simply more convincing, as for $30 more you get upgraded batteries (3.0Ah vs 1.5Ah) and also a brushless hammer drill.

If you can’t use the hammer drill and don’t care about the battery capacity, this impact driver kit is an excellent deal. But if you want the drill or the 3Ah batteries, step up to the combo kit.

I’m a big fan of Metabo HPT’s cordless offerings, and this seems to be an excellent deal.

Note: Metabo HPT and Lowe’s are both ToolGuyd sponsors.

I have been comparing all of the various Father’s Day 2021 cordless drill promos, and have concluded that the Metabo HPT drill/driver $79 kit is the best value of the season. Lowe’s DeWalt Xtreme 12V Max $99 special buy was also a top contender, but I like the HPT’s lower pricing and that it has a 1/2″ chuck.

Metabo HPT’s 18V brushless impact driver kit is also on sale for $79.

$179 is a fair price on the drill and impact driver combo kit, especially considering that the drill and impact driver kits typically sell for $129 and $139 respectively, and this free bonus tool promo makes it a hot buy.

Metabo HPT Compact Brushless Jig Saw CJ18DAQ4M

The Metabo HPT brushless jig saw is compact and lightweight. It features 4 cutting modes, a variable speed trigger, dust blower, and tool-less blade change mechanism.

Metabo HPT CR18DAQ4 Compact Reciprocating Saw Bare Tool

The other option is Metabo HPT’s compact brushless reciprocating saw, which specializes in being compact, lightweight, and versatile.

What makes this a very compelling choice, in my opinion, is that it can be used with reciprocating saw blades and also t-shank jigsaw blades.

The jig saw retails for $99 as a bare tool, and the reciprocating saw for $129.

I was planning on buying the Metabo HPT drill kit for a relative, but I might upgrade them to this combo kit. An impact driver is a great drill/driver complement, and the addition of a bonus jig saw or compact reciprocating saw makes this a great 3pc combo kit deal.

The drill delivers 425 in-lbs max torque and has a 2-speed 0-450/0-1750 RPM gearbox.

Milwaukee Cordless Impact Driver Deals – Which Kit Would You Pick?

$

With Father’s Day right around the corner, this is one of the two times a year when there are plenty of special buys and aggressively-priced cordless power tool promotions.

Several Milwaukee Tool cordless impact driver special buys have returned, each at the $99 price point.

These three options are very different from each other, and so I’m wondering – which would you pick if you needed a good cordless impact driver at $100 budget?

Milwaukee M18 Compact Brushless Impact Driver

Milwaukee 2850-21P Compact Brushless Impact Driver Kit

First up is this M18 compact brushless impact driver special buy, model 2850-21P. It comes with a standard M18/M12 charger, a 2.0Ah battery, and tool bag.

What’s notable about this – and Milwaukee’s other cordless special buys – is that this is their everyday compact brushless impact, with belt clip and 2.0Ah battery. Another brand might have left out the belt clip or downgraded the battery, but this is something Milwaukee hasn’t taken any interest in doing.

The impact delivers 1600 in-lbs of max torque and is said to have the fastest speed in its class with 3200 RPM. I haven’t checked to see if this is still true.

Overall, this is a very capable 18V-class brushless impact kit that is very attractively priced.

Milwaukee M12 Fuel Brushless Impact Driver

Milwaukee M12 Fuel Impact Driver Deal 2553-21

The M12 Fuel impact driver kit, model 2553-21, is another interesting option, providing for a more compact and lightweight user experience.

This impact delivers up to 1300 in-lbs and also has a 4-mode drive control setting so that can dial down the speed and torque if needed.

The kit comes with an M12 charger, 2.0Ah battery, and carrying case.

Milwaukee M12 Compact Drill and Impact Driver Combo

milwaukee-2494-22-m12-drill-and-impact-driver-kit

Lastly, there’s the M12 cordless drill and impact driver combo kit, model 2494-22. The impact delivers up to 1000 in-lbs of max torque, and it’s accompanied by an M12 cordless drill. You get 2x 1.5Ah batteries in the kit, as well as a charger and tool bag.

Buy Now via Home Depot

Which Option Would You Choose?

At first glance, the M18 compact brushless kit seems to deliver the most bang for the buck, with respect to both value and power performance. Get it? BANG for the buck? Because these are impact drivers…

That would be my choice without taking a deeper look.

But, the M12 Fuel impact driver has the 4-mode drive control, which I think comes in handy. You get 3 speed/torque settings and a fourth self-tapping screw mode.

So if looking at the first two options, do you pick the more powerful 18V-class tool, or the more featured 12V-class tool? 1300 in-lbs is still a lot of torque, and it wasn’t very long ago that this was around average for 18V-class performance.

Plus, the M12 Fuel has benefits in being a more compact tool as well.

Then there’s the drill and impact driver combo kit, which is also a regular holiday season special buy. I suppose that would be my last choice, but it also does offer more versatility since you get a drill/driver and a second battery albeit with 1.5Ah vs. 2.0Ah charge capacity.

At the $99 price point, you can’t have everything.

Power, Features, or Value?

Which of these Milwaukee cordless impact driver kits would you buy?

In case anyone says “what about the M12 or M18 SURGE?” Those are also special buys right now – see my Home Depot Father’s Day 2021 Tool Deals post for details.

Keep an Eye on This Bosch PROFACTOR Impact Wrench Deal

In a recent comment, a reader asked if there were any new promos on higher-powered cordless impact wrenches. There are quite a few Father’s Day 2021 specials on impact drivers and compact impact wrenches, but are there any savings to be had on heavier duty impacts?

Tony (thank you for the question!) wrote:

Are there any good deals on higher-powered 1/2″ impact wrenches?

Bosch Profactor Impact Wrench

Over at Lowe’s they have what looks to be a really good deal on this Bosch PROFACTOR 18V brushless 1/2″ impact wrench.

Note: Lowe’s is a ToolGuyd sponsor for Father’s Day 2021. There are more cordless power tool specials on their Great Deals on Tools landing page. You can see more Lowe’s tool deals here on ToolGuyd and even more promos via Lowe’s.com

The new Bosch PROFACTOR impact wrench, model GDS18V-740N, delivers 740 ft-lbs of max fastening torque, and 1,180 ft-lbs of max breakaway torque.

I think that this definitely qualifies as a good deal on a high-powered impact wrench.

The Bosch PROFACTOR impact wrench features 3 torque and speed settings (0-800/1,200/1,750 rpm) for more controlled power output, an LED worklight, and rubber-encased head.

Bosch was unable to get a review sample out to us in time for this post, and so I cannot speak to its comparative performance, but their cordless impact tools are usually very highly regarded. My favorite impact driver for a long time was a Bosch 18V model.

At the time of this posting, the bare tool impact is priced at $249 via Bosch authorized dealers. Lowe’s, however, has what looks to be an exclusive offer: Buy the Bosch impact wrench, and you get a FREE starter kit.

Bosch 18V CORE18V Starter Kit

The free gift starter kit comes with Bosch’s newest Hel-ion fast charger, capable of charging their 18V batteries at a rate of up to 16-amps. The charger has a Power Boost mode, for quickly bringing depleted batteries up to 50% capacity, and 2-fan active air cooling to help keep batteries cooler for faster charging time.

You also get a Bosch PROFACTOR CORE18V 8.0Ah battery.

The CORE18V Performance Starter Kit (GXS18V-16N14) typically retails for $219 at Lowe’s and other retailers.

Lowe’s kicked off this promo for Father’s Day, and it’s set to last through 8/4/2021.

At the time of this posting, the free gift starter kit is sold out in my region, but with the promo set to last another 6 weeks, I’ll be keeping an eye on things. I would expect for Lowe’s to receive more inventory soon.

Bosch has a good track record for impact tools, and early user reviews seem positive. The value seems extremely hard to beat – $249 seems like a great price for a brand new high-powered impact wrench plus a rapid charger and 8Ah next-generation Li-ion battery.

Also Consider: Kobalt XTR 24V Max 1/2″ Impact Wrench

Kobalt XTR Impact Wrench

If the PROFACTOR offer isn’t available in your area yet, or you’re looking for something a little different, also consider the Kobalt XTR 24V Max 1/2″ impact wrench kit.

Although there aren’t any savings here right now, the Kobalt XTR is an excellent high-performing BEAST of an impact wrench. This kit comes with a compact 4Ah battery.

I donated my Kobalt XTR combo kit last year, but couldn’t bring myself to part with the impact wrench, partly because I wanted more time with it, but also because of how impressed I was with its power. This impact wrench – and the Kobalt XTR lineup in general, is worth a closer look.

I’m not alone in my fondness for this impact – the user reviews look to be overwhelmingly positive as well.

Price: $269 for the kit
